I have a CISCO 2950 EI. IOS is (C2950-I6Q4L2-M), Version 12.1(20)EA1a, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
I've reconfigured it countless times but always end up with a blank page when trying to telnet in. It appears to also not accept any inputs.

Has anyone else run into this before and know of a solution?

My son's shirt says "My daddy can fix anything." Now that's a lot to live up to.

Has somebody mischievously changed the speed on it from 9600 to something else?

Forgive me for being lazy and asking.
How do you check the speed and configure if it's incorrect?

Also, curious - what file would that setting be stored in?

You could try different speeds - usually if the speed is wrong you should get a few characters of gobbledegook.

Have you tried factory-resetting it?

I have not but I'll try that and get back to you if it doesn't work.

You are telnetting in or on the console ? I see you had a acl on the vty lines , remove that acl then try to telnet into the device.

Nada, No go.
Restored to factory. Entered new configuration.
I'm over it for today. I've programmed this thing so many times I don't know if any of it is right or not anymore.

Weird thing is I have 2 other spares of of different types switches and they all work with the configuration that I'm inputting.

Time to go home. Play with the kid, love on the wife and drink a beer.

Vince, If you have any suggestions I'd be happy to try them in the morning.

btw - the configuration I'm entering is basically what you see below. I've tried different variations that work on other switches but don't on this peta. I'm sure it's something I'm missing.

int vlan1
ip add 10.1.1.116 255.255.0.0
no shut

ip default-gateway 10.1.1.1

username admin password secret

line vty 0 15
login local

missed the reply sorry viper. I'm consoled in trying to get telnet to work before I configure it for production.

Your config looks like it should accept telnet sessions.
Can you ping the swtich?
If not do you have a DHCP server somewhere or did you set a static address on your workstation?
Check your cables? Is the port active, auto-duplex/speed match NIC on workstation - (switch#show interface status)
The problem doesn't appear to be the switch config so start working up the OSI layer and trouble shoot.

The DHCP is on a seperate server.
The IP on my workstation is dynamic.
Port shows active.
Can ping switch.

Added line - transport input telnet - to VTY config with zero results.

In the cmd window I input telnet 10.1.1.115
It connects and shows window - Telnet 10.1.1.115
Page is blank and won't accept any inputs which is the same on the last I don't know how many attempts.

I noticed your previous config set VLAN1 address to 10.1.1.116 but you did a ping to 10.1.1.115.
Is there a typo somewhere?

Also, maybe try to back out of the local login and set the password for telnet. i.e

switch(config-line)#no login local
switch(config-line)#password mysecretpassword
switch(config-line)#login

That would at least get you back to the basics. If it doesn't work from there maybe update the IOS. It appears that the latest version is 12.1.22-EA13 for that switch.

Tried your suggestion. No go.

I have 3 spare switches. 2950-24port(blank telnet) 2950 -48p and a 3550. So I wouldn't confuse the switches half way through I set 2950-24 as .115 and the others .116 and .117.

I'm missing something. Another gentleman suggested going through the OSI. While I appreciate that suggestion I'm still too green to know what I'm looking for. Granted I'm learning a lot with your help and reading whitepapers looking on my own for answers.

Hmmm... Let's try this. Any suggestions of what to change?

As for updating the IOS - I'd love to. That's one of my goals before I put this puppy into production. I can save any file to my desktop but can't write to the switch using TFTP. Using Solarwinds TFTP. I also had tried CISCO TFTP, TFTPD32, and one more Windows version I can't remember the name of. I thought maybe it was a firewall issue so I temporarily disabled it to test. I have not tried updating the IOS on the other spare switches.

And why in the world would CISCO use characters like 1 and l that look so much like each other? I banged my head over that one for an hour. (No file by that name) Grr.
