I opened my 400 page book on PageMaker 7.0 and black washed across the page. The open page is under the black. An outline of the page and margins appears on top of the black layer, which changes shape as I move up and down the pasteboard. If I zoom out, the black layer disappears, but returns when I return to working size. Any ideas? Thanks.

400 PAGES!!!!!

This is way too big for a single PM doc. Better to aim for a number of smaller files of around 20 pages each, and when complete, you can 'book' and print them as one, or convert each smaller file to PDF and combine them into one PDF using Acrobat.

If you can open but not view the current large document, then make save several copies - at least 10 to start with - with different names. Then open each copy, and using the Layout menu, delete all but the first 20 pages from the copy and save and close. Open the new file and see if it appears as normal before continuing the process, which will be time-consuming, but worth it if it works.

Keep deleting pages from all the copies - leaving 20 pages at a time - of course, a different set of pages each time.

Thanks for the suggestion. It doesn't seem to work, though. The puzzling aspect is this is also happening on my cover document, which is only a one page document. This happened after I used the save for service provider program. Fortunately, the disc for the provider is fine and the printing of the book is under way. I am able to print the document even though I can't see it on the screen. I created a test document, saved it, then opened it, and it is fine.

Sounds like a video driver issue to me.

Which version of Windows are you using?

I have the same problem with one of my Pagemakeer users. They are using W2k, and PageMaker 7.0. If I give the user Admin rights on the local machine the problem goes away. I do not think it is a video driver issue, or a problem with the file being too big.

Sounds very unusual, but there's your solution.

Giving users Admin rights on their local machine is not an acceptable answer for most environments today, given the dangers of the Internet, viruses, worms, SPAM, etc. There has to be another way. I just have not found it yet.
