I have a workstation NT 4.0. When you go to start-programs-to the left of all applications loaded except microsoft you see black squares. Any ideas how to get the icons back. I have tried reinstalling SP5, Video Drivers,???

The rest of your icons are okay? Most system icons come from C:\WINNT\system32\SHELL32.dll. Sounds like that file is corrupt.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

Might be as simple as locating the ShellIconCache in WINNT
folder...deleting it...and rebooting.
The reboot will make it rewrite itself

cadman2

cadman2_2000@yahoo.com

IMHO...TweakUI is THE thing I'm scared of: tried running it ('cause I love "dinking") and found NUMEROUS times that all my desktop icons had cloned themselves to something they seemed to agree upon (without my direction or prior knowledge) so I sent it to DA DUMP.

Tried the shellicon cache and did not do anything. Anymore suggestions in this matter? I also have another machine which is doing the same thing.

Did you try slamming the aformentioned shell32.dll into the system32 folder?
If your partition isn't NTFS...you can boot do DOS...change attributes and delete the file then copy the new one to its place.

I'm taking for granted you've run virus detect.

I'd also
1) scour the registry and see what icons it calls for...and where it looks to find them.

2) Compare registry data from a machine that's running ok with those you're getting ditziness from.

Dontcha' just love a challenge?
