bizzare network "problem"

I am running win2k pro with ADSL using Enternet client.

Yesterday I added a XP machine onto a personal network connected using a single crossed ethernet cable. I shared my internet connection, set the MTU, and everything was running fine.

Now, today my ISP dropped the connection, and things get wierd.

If I log off, or do a full 30 sec shutdown, when I log on, or restart, I am connected to the internet. I have to do nothing, and I am connected.

However, I have three connections in network and dial-up, my LAN, the ISP, and the virtual connection Enternet sets up. The ISP connection shows it is disconnected, and I have the red X icon in task bar. Ipconfig shows, "Enternet adapter" shows media state disconnected. Yet I am typing here.

This is all good, but the XP machine cant get on internet.
The XP machine is configured right, it worked yesterday. In fact, it gets an IP from my machine. In limeted testing, it had IP of 192.168.0.6 and on restart it had 192.168.0.86.

I googled this, and the only thing I got was what I belive is french stuff, you can see it here.

It includes the line, "IMPECCABLE " which I take to be impossible, which I agree. I did a full shut down, started up, and I am on internet.

Other info, when I restart, and do an ipconfig /all I get a lease time of when I started the machine, but the lease is only for 1 hour.

This post is a ramble, but I havn't seen anything this strange in computers before.

Any help, any hint, is of course appriciated.

the lease time being 1 hour is to discourage sharing of the line with other computers.. a cheap tactic, but it does earn them more $$, and clears up their IP resources when their customers' computers are down.

It sounds like the gateway on your internal network card on the 2k machine is pointing to the old IP

it should look something like this..
WAN (external connection)
IP: isp provided
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: ISP provided

LAN (internal connection on 2k computer)
IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: IP of WAN (since its dhcp, you will have to change it every time you drop your connection and the lease has expired)

LAN (internal connection on XP computer)
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1

anyhow here's a possible fix, its lower maintenance than your current setup at least..

set up ICS on both computers (host and client) and you should be good to go.

start --> help
go to index
and type internet connection
all info regarding setting up ICS should be there.

You can also set up a backup dial-up on demand connection, so if the xp computer wants to connect and dsl is down, if you have a second line connected to the 2k computer it will autodial when the xp machine (or the 2k machine) attempts to access the internet and no connection is detected.

PS, I got ICS back up and running, sipmly by sharing the other connection. But I am still very curios how this is working witht he pppoe adapter showing disconnected. Any help would be great.

It looks like you were able to get an IP from your ISP via DHCP.

I think you are right sebtastic.

Is this a common function of ISP that include the Enternet client with setup? I would imagine not.

I would have to guess something changed on the server end recently to allow DHCP rather than pppoe. I remember my lease used to be like 20 years, no it is 1 hour. Which is no problem. Also, my IP used to change, now I get he same IP all the time.

So now I have two questions. Since I went from using pppoe to DHCP, is this possible with all ADSL setups? I would think not, but I would also like to do it in the future if possible, since I find it(DHCP) far better than pppoe.

The second question is, how do I authenticate? It used to be username/pass, but since I bypass the client, how do I authenticate? I would call and ask, but I am American living in South Korea, so I can't really.
