BIOS questions

I have a couple of questions about computer BIOS settings.

1. If you unplug your mouse from a machine that is running, why will it work again on some machines when you plug it back in? It seems like a BIOS issue to me.

2. What are the parallel settings for like (I think) ESS
what do they do?

and where can I find more information about these things?

Most desktop pc's I've come across don't like the idea of "hot-swapping" your mice if you use the PS/2 port. However, most laptops I've seen built in the last 4 years don't have a problem.

You're talking about a PS/2 port, right?

I'd agree that it is a combination of the BIOS and Southbridge. The southbridge is part of the motherboard chipset responsible for components like PS/2 ports, parallel ports, serial ports, USB ports, etc. Some are just more advanced than others. I'd say it has less to do with the BIOS. ~cdogg
