I have a 2 week old esc p4vmm2 board with a new 30 gig maxtor on the pri-master and a cdrom on the sec-master. it works fine except every couple of boot ups it won't boot unless you go in the bios and reset the hard drive setting because it says it isn't installed. Yet the cdrom is still set and the clock keeps time so it isn't the battery. After resetting it to user it works fine. I have been setting it to user but now i am setting it to auto to see if this cures it. Any one have any ideas? will setting it to auto fix it? It has an AMI bios and running ME. it is a computer i set up for a guy i work with and it is getting annoying with the phone calls so i want to get it fixed. the place i bought it from isn't helping.

I have seen situations on PC's I have serviced where a system boots so fast that the hard drive does not have enough time to fully spin-up before the BIOS check completes. Some BIOS provide a "boot delay" option to allow the hard drive more time to achieve ready status. Adding a couple seconds of delay time usually cures this problem. Another work around is to turn off the quick boot feature in the BIOS. This will cause the BIOS to do a full memory check which will give plenty of time for the HDD to spin up.

A weak power supply can also cause a HDD to fail to be recognized during bootup. The HDD could also be defective. Try running the manufacturers dianostics on the drive. Another possibility is to use the BIOS utility to save the drive parameters into the CMOS, versus using auto-detect mode during boot-up.

Does the HDD bootup OK, if you first press Ctrl-Alt-Del after the initial failed attempt and restart the system?

thanks for the info mooreman
it makes sense that if it is booting up to quick that it might not see the drive. It is a p4vmm2 board running A p4 1.7 cpu. On the second restart after detecting the drive in the bios it does start up everytime. There has never been an indication that there is a problem with the drive.
i am going to disable the fast boot too. just to be sure.
thanks
