BIOS Flash in Windows 2000

Most current operating systems including Windows 2000 run in protected mode, and won't let you or the operating system directly access the BIOS to flash it.
In order to flash many BIOSes you need to boot from a DOS floppy disk and run the flashing software, as this is the only way many can be done.

So...if I unplug my hard drive and try to boot from a dos diskette....will that work? because right now when I try to boot into dos on a floppy, win 2k will not let you.

Win2k has no say over booting from a floppy or not - the boot process happens before o/s is loaded. Its the bios which has settings for which device to boot from first. If you can't boot from floppy currently (and floppy drive ok), you need to go into bios settings and change the boot sequence to floppy first.

It does not matter which OS you are running, you must do the flash from a DOS boot disk, the OS, in fact the whole hdd, is irrelevant.

Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

the boot disk I was using was bad I guess....I made a new one and it booted to disk just fine...

flashed my BIOS and am all set...

thanks!
