I look at the Sun site for the x86 platform of Solaris 8 and 9 and I see three things, download binaries, download media kit, and download Operating System.

Is there/ what is the difference?

Also, if my immediate need to learn is Solaris 8, how will that be affected/ hampered if I instead downloaded Solaris 9? Is there alot of difference? Is it the same as 8 but with more tools?

Thanks. Sean.

Download Solaris 9 Operating System, x86 Platform Edition from
The media kit it the boxed software on CD with some installation documentation. As far as I know you can't download Solaris 8 anymore. Solaris 9 is similar to solaris 8 with some bug fixes and enhancements applied. The chart here outines the major differences between releases. From a learning point of view anything you could do on 8 will work on 9.
