Inevitably whenever I build a file which has a lot of points, Illy starts to lag considerably re. screen re-freshes, saving etc.

Is their anyway that I can improve the performance of the app. in these sort of situation? (like "proxy" view on InDesign, for better performance)

Go to View and select Outline.
You can also set specific layers to be displayed as outlines by Ctrl-clicking on the eye icon.

Another thing you can do is work with several layers and hide those that you are not working on.

You should also consider checking whether the amount of points you are using are really necessary.

What version are you using. I went from AI 10 to CS2 this week because I was having trouble with AI locking up with files that had a large number of vector graphics lines (arount 60,000). I could not rescale, I could not rotate. AI just locked up. I upgraded to CS2 and it performs fine on these files with 60,000 vector lines.

Wow. You only upgraded your software - not any modifications to your hardware?

parkerbrown: No need to upgrade hardware. That was not the issue. It was a problem with AI10 that was not a problem once I loaded up AI CS2. I'm running on an IBM T41 with 1Gb RAM.

Would the improvement be similar for CS (one)?

Which I am using.
