Best way to put music on my web site

How do i put music on my web site so that people can listen to it but NOT download it?

yeah i know i can use a sound recorder and record something i play on the web but i've been to site (can't remember the name) that there is a list of songs in a box and if you click on one it starts flash player and you can listen to the music... it might have been streaming the song... but i didnt know if there was any other way besides using flash player and anyone knows of or is flash player the best tool to do this?

If we stream the songs would that stop the mp3 from being downloaded to the persons temp files?

Yes, it may have been using flash or some other form of streaming. Playing the sound through the flash file will mean that the flash file is downloaded, not the mp3 file, but as long as you are aware that this does not mean that user's can't download the music as your initial question hints that you thought otherwise.

so then they could download the swf file? or does that get automatically downloaded to their temp files?

So in short there is no absolute way to stop a music piece from being downloaded from the website.

I guess we could put just snippets up there and then if they do get it they only get a very small piece of it..

Using a flash player to stream the .mp3 would prevent users from being able to download the .mp3 to their computer. The would be able to play the song through the website and that's it because they wouldn't be able to source the file.

It would still be quite easy to extract the music that is being played though (even if you can't get directly to the mp3 file).

ca8msm but are you talking about using a third party programs (like Replay Music, shareware) to capture the song?

I realize that if someone wants to steal the song that bad, heck let them go through all that trouble to try and get good quality...

In a site I did, the music link pointed to a pointer file. That file pointed to the actually music file.

But, Im sure some can figure out how to get the mp3. But the average joe probably only knows how to right click and save.... Your call.

Why not allow them to listen to an excerpt only, and then have to pay to download the whole thing.

I believe there is a way to do that with Real Audio. I know that is the way it is setup at

At least I've never tried to get around the way that is setup - he doesn't allow the downloading of files, only listening.

How 'bout adding a watermark to the audio file? Most higher-end sample sites use that method.
