Hi, due to cost constraint, my company intend to migrate NT4.0 with exchange 5.5 to Windows 2000 and remain as exchange 5.5, with newer hardware.
Anyone experience that and can come out with some important points to take note.

Thank You
Dnack

dnack, to provide useful points it would be helpful to know: 1. Are you moving Exchange 5.5 from old hardware running NT 4.0 to new hardware running Win 2000 (and keeping the same server name)? 2. Is the plan to ALSO move Exchange 5.5 into an Active Directory environment? 3. Or will Exchange 5.5 REMAIN in a non-Active Directory environment, but just be running on a Win 2000 server with new hardware? 4. Does your company have this one (or more than one) Exchange installations? Thanks!

Hi i am moving my exchange 5.5 into newer hardware running windows 2000. i would opt for a least risky method. The DC is windows 2000 and it doesn't matter if i use back the same server name or not. lastly, this is the only exchange server in the company

dnack Thank you. It appears you'll be moving Exchange 5.5 from an old NT 4.0 server to a new Win 2000 server in an Active Directory environment. marcus41 posted a very helpful whitepaper overview. You might also see for some general considerations. See also for some related points and another source of tips.

Dude all you have to do is the following:

1 - Load one of your Wint2k servers as stand alone
2 - joing the domain
3 - make sure the SMTP service is not loaded in your new machine

4 - Load Echange 5.5 and joing your organization as a second exchange server

5 - Clean your GAL, make sure that all your mailboxes in your exchange server maches the alias name with their login name.

6 - For those mailboxes that do not match or have a login name associated with the mailbox use the following utility "NTDSNoMatch". U can get this utility at ms web site for free and read the instructions how to use it

7 - Once you have cleaned your GAL, install the ADC that comes with Exchange 2000 and connect to the AD. From there you can start to move mailboxes to your new Exchange 2000 server. Once you have finished deleted the old server from your organization and turn it off.

I am assuming that you migarted from Wint 4.0 to Win2k AC already. You only have exc 5.5 server and should be real easy, if you don't want to do any of my tips you can maybe use a third party software to migrate to exc 2000, I also done it that way

jgcpu,

If you add an Exchange server to an existing site and move the mailboxes, you can't simply remove the old server from the site, as it is the First Server in the site. There is a procedure for removing the First Server. Also, if he removes the server before every user has logged into Exchange following the movement of mailboxes, some users will be unable to connect to their mailbox without manually reconfiguring Outlook.

dnack,

If you wnat to use the same server name, you can follow the steps in the FAQ I created. It works with W2k as well as NT4.

fue, nice FAQ. once 5.5 is on the Win2k server, do you have any suggestions for the best method to upgrade 5.5 to exch2k when the org name is incompatible?

in a test lab, i've gone as far as getting the 5.5 exchange connected to AD and working.
