How Could I in an easy and cheap way (better if free) block the pop-ups that are getting me crazy when I get into the internet? At the same time sometimes when my son use the computer and try to play games if I set up windows to block pop-ups then he may not use it?

Thank you

Whats wrong with the pop-up blocker with Windows/Internet Explorer? You can always configure the pop-up blocker to allow the sites your son goes to. Tools> Pop-up Blocker> Pop-up Blocker Settings...> add the sites to your exceptions list.

IMHO, I'd stick with the built-in pop-up blockers in IE or Firefox or both. When you start adding in more apps/plug-ins for duplicating already built-in features, then you're just asking for more headaches, as you'll have more of a chance of running into an issue somewhere.

Also, if you like the Google Toolbar, it has a separate built-in pop-up blocker.

And while you're at it, make sure you have some anti-spyware aps installed, and your Antivirus is up to date. If you're having so many pop-ups that it's annoying, then you may have a bigger problem.

Here's my favorite few security apps in case you don't already have something in place:

Firewall: Comodo Antivirus Pro (Free) - I was using ZoneAlarm, also good.

Antivirus: AVG Antivirus Free
Antispyware:
AVG Antispyware (free for 30 days with protection, free indefinitely for scanning).
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal SE
Spybot Search and Destroy
SpywareBlaster

You can download any/all of these at
All of these apps are very light on resources, except for during system scans. Otherwise, you hardly notice any of them are there (unless you have a really old computer with very little memory - less than 256 megabytes probably unbearable, less than 512 megabytes noticeable).

Of course it depends on the kind of pop-ups that are being used. Take a hop over to this site. You'd be surprised at (sometimes) how little most of these pop-up blockers handle.

As an addition to my previous post, I had "Pop-up stopper free" and had 8 popups load on the site I mentioned after clicking all the links.

I should note I've been to a couple of sites where the pop-up stopper failed too...

YMMV as always.

Hey, that's a pretty neat site to review. Thanks for the link, Glen9999.

Just thought I'd mention my test just now.

Of all of the "bad" pop-up tests, I had 3 that came through:

Drop down Popup - not blocked
Floating banner - was there, but it didn't float around on the screen
Sticky popup - not blocked

I was using Firefox's built-in popup blocker

I've not tried IE's pop-up blocker. I may try that later.

Oh, and the "good" pop-ups all did work correctly - they all showed.

On the 3 that pointed to other sites, I didn't see anything - maybe those sites were no more? Or other wise, not sure. It looked like one had a "page parking" page, one was just not there (could've been an error at the time), and the other didn't seem to do anything, really - but was a real site.

Cool site Glenn9999, IE's pop-blocker seemed to stop all of these pretty well. The three mentioned above (drop-down, floating banner, sticky) were the only ones that seemed to get by. These three were also probably the least annoying out of all the pop-ups too. Pop-up blocker was set on medium filter setting.

Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Filterset.G extensions not only remove popups, they remove ALL ads from web pages. I scored 100% on all of those tests, but wish to thank Glenn9999 for putting the link up.

I use Firefox version 2 as my browser and see no pop ups at all except those that are intended....
