Best Solution for backing up 2TB Oracle DBs?

I'm at a new company and they are having issues with backing up a 2TB oracle database housed on a VMware virtual machine (not sure OS level). They try to snapshot the VM and the backup the data from the snapshot but it fails.
There has to be a better solution, backup system with VM agent, SSD on the SAN, or a script to backup the database first.

Is there a best solution?

How about trying ARCserve to backup the solution whihc will give agentless backup of VMware and online backup of Oracle agents ....
