What would you say would be the best possible way to configure a server to run Cognos in a small to medium environment? Should we go heavy on the processor, or is memory more important. Disk IO? I am looking for the best performance with the least investment in hardware.

Hi

The questions you should ask are the following:
Do you need fast turn around?
Are your reports ...
v.large?
Impromptu or PowerPlay based?
data or presentation intensive?
Are you deploying using Upfont or IWR?

Impromptu can be very intensive on the CPU (taking all remaining CPU cycles until it has finished compiling, but can offset some of the data processing back onto the database if designed well)

PowerPlay is more memory instensive than CPU instensive.

For a machine running just PPES a medium CPU PIII 500MHz+ with 256MB Ram, for Impromptu I'd up the CPU a bit more.

I have deployed the full suite on a PIII 500Mhz laptop with only 96MB Ram and it ran fine.

I hope this helps.
