Best practice for site setup? 1

I'm designing a new paid membership-based site. It's conceivable that some subscribers will want, and pay for, customization to one or more pages. Some of the ability to customize will, of course, be built into the design (such as choose fields for creating a download), and I will make some features into modules/add-ons. However, for other customers, they may want a different design to a page or an additional page for their specific needs.

Would it be bad practice to create a directory and pages for each customer, in a separate directory? Or would this prove to be a nightmare when it comes time to troubleshoot or update pages?

Sorry if this makes little sense, just got back from the gym ... glad to clarify, and of course I appreciate your help.

I can't see any need to create a seperate page for each user. A seperate directory for downloads (etc) may be beneficial for security reasons but that would be the only reason to have files seperated.

When possible I prefer simplicity

What about the use of subdomains such as customername.mywebsite.com ... those pointing towards subfolders of the site, and only being for customers requesting (and paying for) custom pages?

I think an everyone-uses-the-same-page solution is by and far the better route; however, since I saw some similar sites offering the subdomain option, and I wanted to be knowledgeable about how much legwork would be involved in maintenance.

Using the subdomain route is possible with a bit of URL Rewriting. Basically, the user goes to a page that doesn't exist, you forward them onto the relevant page but they don't notice they have gone there as the URL doesn't change.
