I have been using Illustrator 9 for about 3 weeks. I am slowly learning how to use the program. I have a question concerning dpi's and graphics resolution. I have created an image (a company logo) in Illustrator - the size of the image is 300 pixels wide x 175 high. After creating the vector image, I used the "Save for Web" feature to save the image as a transparent GIF. The resulting GIF looks great - very clean and crisp.
My next task is to re-create the logo in various sizes in an attempt to keep the same quality. For example, I want to create the same logo at 144 pix wide x 72 high (2"x1"). I figured the best way was to totally re-draw it in Illustrator at that size then use the "Save for Web" feature to save it as a GIF. After creating the smaller image, at actual size, it does not look as crisp and smooth as the larger image - even slightly pixelated. I realize that Illustrator creates images at 72 dpi only. My question is: is there a way to improve quality for this smaller image? Would it help to save the Illustrator image then open it Photoshop to convert it from vector to a bitmap then save as a GIF? Or, is the quality limited when working with smaller images? This particular logo is mostly text with a few shapes (triangles) and only 3 colors.
I know better than to simply take the larger AI image and size it down then save to GIF - that is why I was re-creating it smaller. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Basically, I just need help on getting the best quality, crispness, and resolution in a small image. I can provide more info if needed. Thanks.

You've got it all wrong my friend. If you created the logo using soley illustrator tools you have whats known as independant resolution. Vector based artwork can literally be printed/exported at any size. As for the resolution, Illustrator creates art at 800, not 72 dpi. Just resize the art and reexport. Or, in the save for web, change the percentage to like 300 percent.

Looks like I was wrong about a few things in my original post. Thanks for the suggestion jAQUAN. I did not even realize there was an image sizing option when saving for the web.
