Can anyone recommend a good book (books) for PHP/MySQL?

I'm reasonably competent with Perl/C and SQL so was looking for something that went beyond the basics.

I find the Amazon reviews to be contradictory.

Thanks in advance

Try this website:
I use the manual for PHP downloadable from this page and it is good enough when you have C syntax knowledge because it contains the function reference included and it's generally the only thing you need. I use the manual in CHM format because there is also function search feature ;-)

Same advice for MySQL. Use the online version of the reference at It will clarify all questions since you seem to be familiar with programming/database concepts as such.
I have never used a book in my learning PHP/MySQL.

I purchased the first edition of "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling and Laura Thompson (now in Second Edition). I've been very happy with it and would definitely recommend it to someone that already has some programming experience.

However, now that I've been programming PHP for a little while I find myself using the PHP manual more and more. The book just scratches the surface of what PHP can do with MySQL, but it's a great start for a beginner.

It's on amazon.com here:
ISBN:067232525X

Good luck,
-Ron

I'm a complete PHP beginner and got PHP and MySQL Web Development 2nd Edition" by Welling/Thompson

Also like Ron I have been very happy with it. It's simple enough for beginners but goes into quite advanced PHP with some bloody great examples.

I also recommend BORROWING the PHP Bible, it's not worth buying but if you can borrow it for a while it's worth a read.

And make sure to go through the wealth of info on zend.com, php.net and onlamp!!
