OK - we've now installed twelve X450e'x in eight locations. Some are stacked 3 high, others are single but all are 48 port. We have multiple subnets, vlans and routing setup and working. Oh, we also have VoIP phones going through as well (not that that makes any difference).

Being new to Extreme and learning, I am looking for real-life suggestions as to how I might be able to centrally backup the configs on each of these devices so that if one needs to be replaced or looses its config for what ever reason, we can load from a backup file.

Can anyone please provide any recommendations, suggestions and/or success stories for accomplishing what I am hoping to do?

Thanks all.[bigears]

We use EPICenter Extreme's device manager, it allows us to schedule TFTP uploads of the config's. Which we do on a regular basis. It also has other features that you may find benficial.

Thank you rn4it;

I believe we purchased EPICenter but it has not yet been installed. Thanks for reminding me.

You should definately install EPICenter. If you need anyhelp with it, just post questions here. You can schedule weekly backups and you can configure how many backup copies you want to keep, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, or no limit, etc.

You should schedule your weekly archives for a downtime. For many companies this is Sunday morning. Also, run a Manual upload on all your switches the first time.

EPICenter gives you SNMP trap alarming and you can configure EPICenter to send you e-mail or mobile phone text message if a switch goes down, etc. It's really useful. It's got a lot of potential as an NMS. Also, if you run the command "enable rmon" on each X450e's in the CLI you will be able to use the Real Time stats (RT Stats) to check host and uplink port utilization and errors from the EPICenter GUI RT Stats screen. After you enable RMON it takes a minute or two before you can actually start reading statistics.

I can go on and on about the advantages of EPICenter. You picked a good switch (of course I'm bias) I know a bit about QoS on Extreme so if you need help with QoS on your EXOS switches for your VoIP phones just post a question in the Forum.

Good Luck BobMCT

we back up our extreme configs to a standard tftp server using
upload configuration tftpserver-ip filename every 4:00

uploads the config at 4am every morning and the tftp server deals with archiving it etc.
