We have a WAN domain environment and would like to have your opinion on mapping network drives or shortcuts to servers. Does mapped network drives slows down the login process?Option on LAN vs WAN servers.

Forumit,

generally speaking yes, it does slow down the LOGIN process. The links or mapped drives are checked first to see if they are up, before login continues...

We run Win2K3 SP2 with about 300 XP SP2 clients. When "Always wait for the
network at computer startup and login" is disabled. People complain that
Outlook, their redirected My Documents etc... aren't available until the
network starts( network icon by the clock). HOWEVER!!! If I enable the above
setting people complain that it takes up to two minutes to log on while the
computer is "applying computer setting...applying user settings...") etc...

I hope you get what I am trying to say...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

Are shortcuts to servers on desktop also checked at login?

You could get around this, bit messy though.
In the start up folderr you run a batch file to map the drives. This way it needs to login 1st then map.
