Hi guys,

Just trying to setup BES Express on our server but get to the SQL point and it can't seem to connect to SQL.

I told it to create a new DB. There is a SQL Express install there already doing Sophos PureMessage but for the life of me cannot get it to create another DB.

At the "Database Information" screen I give it the instance where i created the DB. s0378-0592-ex01\SOPHOS and then the DB name BESmgmt but I always get the error "An attempt to connect to the database was unsuccessful. Check the logs..."

The log instance says:
[30000] (03/09 13:47:18.911):{0x1704} <4>Mar 09 13:47:18 S0378-0592-EX01 {0xA6C} 0345: (#25137) {ConnectionItem::ConnectToDB} Failed to connect. Connection string is Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Server=S0378-0592-EX01\BESmgmt;Database=BESmgmt;Network=dbmssocn;Trusted_Connection=Yes

[30000] (03/09 13:47:18.911):{0x1704} <3>Mar 09 13:47:18 S0378-0592-EX01 {0xA6C} 0348: (#10000) An attempt to connect the database was unsuccessful. Refer to the installation log file for more information.

Any ideas going crazy trying all the different ways...any help much appreciated.

Thanks

George

I personally am of the mindset to create a dedicated virtual machine for BES and BES only. It tends to be a little contankerous when having to share with other applications. I would imagine the "Express" version would be simular. Too many dependancies that have to be of a certain revision and stay at those rev's to ensure proper operation like CDO and Java to name a few. I'm not familiar with the particulars of Sophos, but it might be a database version mismatch or something like that.

Having it on it's own dedicated VM would guarantee no to far less problems. Of course, my two cents :)

Is the existing SQL Express instance on the same machine that you are trying to install BES on? By default SQL Express doesn't listen for remote connections so you can only connect to it from the local machine. You'll also need to have the SQL Browser service running on the machine which is running the SQL Server so that the remote machines can figure out which TCP port to connect to.

Apologies, have now setup the database on an alternative SQL instance on another server.
