Bellsouth DSL and Linksys Router Help

I recently got DSL from Bellsouth and I have Linksys Broadband Firewall Router that serves as a tunnel to my work. I have another Linksys Broadband Firewall Router that is used for my home network.

The way I have it set up is I have my Westell DSL modem going into a linksys 8 port switch with one cable going out to my work router and another cable going out to my personal router.

The work router is functioning correctly with no issues. The one I'm having problems with is the personal router.

I have the cable coming from the switch to internet port of the router. When it is connected like this it will not connect to the internet at all. If I have it connected to one of the other ports it works fine which makes sense because at that point it is just another switch.

I'm using PPPoe and I get "Cannot connect PPPoe server" when I have it connected to the internet port of the router.

My username and password is all correct.

I have tried putting the westel as bridged but that killed the internet all together.

Does anyone have any ideas? If you need more info please let me know.

In every BellSouth install I have seen, the Westell IS a router, so you do not need any more routers, at all.

Since the Westell router is doing all the PPPoE, you do not need to do PPPoE again, for other routers you may have convinced yourself you DO need.

Since ANY router moves packets from one subnet to another, make sure the addtitional routers you have confused yourself into thinking you need are not set to the same subnet as the Westell.

Out of curiosity, why do you think multiple routers is a good idea for your network?

The one router I have for work I have to have for my Cisco IP phone. I used to have all my PC's connected to this router and they could see these computers on my work network. I didn't like the idea of that so I bought another one for my home network.

My thinking was whatever I had shared, I would be sharing to the world if I didn't have another router.

The Westell has an IP of 192.168.1.254 (default)

and the router I have connected now along with the PC's connected to it have IP ranges of 192.168.1..

IS that my problem?

Now that you mention the Westell being a router, I remember seeing where you could setup DHCP which in my experience only comes with router.

I'm kind of learning all this stuff as I go so I appreciate your response.

Yes, be sure any additional routers to the Westell are NOT in the 192.168.1.x subnet and do NOT have PPPoE configured. It still sounds as if you do not need more than the westell and the VPN router to your work place.

Thank you for your help. I have decided to return the router and to just use the westell as my router for my personal network.
