I have an old version of Illustrator (10), and I am attempting to do a very simple thing for a website (I am not a graphics person). I just want to create some text with drop shadows and a transparent background. I have no problem getting a nice font, setting the color of the text and creating the drop shadow but, I cannot figure out how to make the background transparent so that, when I export the image as a .jpg, and put it in my website's header, the color of the header (which has a gradient) shows through.

Can someone help me with this beginner's question?

thank you.

You can't have transparency in a .jpg file. You should use either .gif or .png for this task - .png is the best (24 bit, not 8 bit) since you are working with shadows but you'll have to use a javascript hack ( in order to make the transparency work properly on IE 5.5 and 6.

Thank you for your response.

It doesn't appear that Illustrator v.10 supports exporting to gif or png, or "Save As" to either of those formats so, I guess I will have to find a different tool to use.

I will also check out the link for the javascript hack. That you provided.

Thanks so much for this valuable information.

Use "Save for Web" instead of "Save As" and you should be able to select those formats.

Ah yes! That's it.

Thanks so much!

I am in business now.
