Beginner. Bleed Question

Hi,
sorry for this stupid question.
Can you explain to me what are:
Bleed size, Live Area for text & crop marks.
I have these directions:
bleed size: 16 3/4" x 11 1/8" (1/8 bleed on all sides),
trims to 16 3/8" x 10 7/8",
Live area: 16" x 10 1/2"

I though that the bleed size = trim (crop) size + 1/8 on all sides...
Not so, according to the directions above.
Could you, please direct me to the source where I can find some information?

I don't like math so I am not reading too much into your post but when choosing the page size (which is often handled in the PPD anyway), your instructor may be calculating the paper size needed for the crop marks - - which will extend beyond the bleed.

So who's giving the directions? How about asking them about what is up?

Thank you for your help.
According to your answers I got everything correct.
I'm not sure what's going on with these thick catalog guys - most of the ads there have text & pictures far beyond the required Live Area - almost to the crop marks.
The problem is that our ad has a lot of small text and Live Area of ~1/2" will make it even smaller.
Do we need to bribe them or something?
