BEFW11S4 V.2 - XP VPN SERVER

I have a BEFW11S4 V.2, 1.44.2z, Dec 13 2002. I have no problem establishing a vpn connection to work. Works like a champ.

However, I would like to set up my xp computer behind the linksys, as a vpn server. The computer has a static ip address. The incoming connections has enabled users, vpn enabled and a specified TCP/IP address for assignment.

On the router I have pptp pass thru enabled, port forwarding enabled for port 1723 and 47.

However, I cant make a vpn connection to my xp vpn server.
At Linksys tech support request I upgraded from 1.37 to 1.44. Before the upgrade I could see in the log file that there my attempts to make a pptp connection were being recorded. After the upgrade there is no record of the pptp connection attempts.

After the upgrade I recyled the power on the router and xp computer.

Any one have any ideas what to look at?

Some more information.
- reset the linksys router.
- tested the vpn connection successfully with another computer on the network.
- nmap shows the pptp port open.
- linksys log file shows the pptp port being touched.

Some more information. It looks the firmware upgrade resulted in a schizoid box. Sometimes it is v1.44.2 and sometimes it is version v1.37!!!!

Any ideas of how to get out of this mess and why it occurred in the first place?

I tried the looooooooooooooong reset of 15+seconds before and after loooooong power recycld of 10+seconds. That didnt help any.

If you have an xp PC why are you bothering to set up the vpn at all - simply use the XP Remote Desktop facility, open port 3389 on the router and, as long as you are running the Remote desktop client software (standard on XP, downloadable for all other Windows platforms) you have full access to your XP PC across the desktop.

This assumes you have resolved static/dynamic IP issues...

Thanks for the good suggestion, and I will try that eventually..... But right now, I need to figure out the appropriate pyschiatric remedy to get a clean firmware version on the box and be able to forward any port.

What kind of VPN are you using and did you have to make any changes to the device to get the VPN to work?

I am just using the xp vpn built in server. So no changes there. Still cant get my firmware updated correctly. Router still acting schizoid. Sometimes it is v1.37 and sometimes it is 1.442. How do you fix this? Linksys support not very good.
