Any ideas how I can make this work?:
Internet <-> Dlink DSL300G <-> Linksys BEFW11S4 <-> LAN

The DSL is PPPoA, but the router doesn't do PPPoA (the modem does, including logon/authorisation). Both modem and router are DHCP serving (don't know how to get the modem to stop). So far, I've managed to access both units' configurations when hooked up as above, the modem on 192.168.0.1 and the router on 192.168.1.1, but can't ping past the modem.

It would seem to me that I should be able to do this, with the router handling the LAN chores (DHCP, NAT, routing), and the modem ... uh... modeming, but I haven't had any luck. I also don't know beans about IP addressing.

I can also get static IPs from the ISP if I ask, if there's a solution there.

Thanks in advance.
Matt

I've long since passed the point at which it would have been sensible to buy a dedicated solution. Now it's principle.

On the linksys:
Setup page: Set to obtain an address automatically
DHCP Page: Disable
Advanced|Dynamic Routing: Select "Router" instead of Gateway.

Turn off modem and router. Power up Modem. When stable, power up router. Finally power up PCs.

bcastner,

Thanks for the help - I'm still not sure what did the trick, but your suggestion got me back working on the problem. It may have just been a timing issue, the big success is that I'm finally getting good DNS addresses (the ISP DNS) through to the PCs. The only real change that I can identify is that that I changed the Linksys to a 10.0.0.1 LAN address, from the 192.168.1.0 default.
Bringing the system back from everything power off is not straighforward though.

As it turns out, the system is working fine with the router set to gateway (doesn't work as "router"), and serving DHCP to the PCs. I think I read somewhere that the modem won't serve more than one address.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Matt
