BEFSR41 Random Reboot

Ok. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router. Two machines running WinXP Home. I can get everything working fine, internet file sharing, etc. The problem is when browsing the internet the systems randomly reboot.

I even tested a theory. Everytime I visit Linsys' website and click on the support tab the system reboots. Oh the irony. Also, after rebooting the computer I cna no longer access the router or internet and have run the network setup wizard again.

Oh and when i do run the wizard I tell it i'm connecting through another computer or residential gateway. That's the only option that has let me connect to the router. If you can help please do! Thanks.

Another thing... After contacting Linksys they told me to try various ways of power cycling. I tried them all and the problem still persists. The latest firmware is installed.

What firmware version do you have. If it is under 1.2 you might want to try and upgrade from Linksys.

If I understand your problem correctly it is your computers that reboot, not the router.

I cannot think of how the router could have anything to do with this situation.

But browsing the internet may cause a reboot. Graphics drivers, lan nic drivers, and marginal memory could all lead to this problem.

First, right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recover, and uncheck to restart on errors.

Second, right-click My Computer, Manage, Event Viewer and look at all three logs to see if when it reboots it had made an entry as to the problem. If so post it here.

Third, go to the web sites for your graphics board and your Lan adapter. If there are updates to the drivers or firmware obtain and apply them.

Fourth, set both computers to use fixed or static IPs. Assuming the BEFSR41 is at its default settings, under Network Connections, Properties, TCP/IP set the first computer to 192.168.1.2 and the second to 192.168.1.3. Click the 'Advanced' button and under the WINS tab enable Netbios over TCP/IP on both machines. Now you should never have to run the Network Wizard again.
