Three notes:

1. Linksys will accept an RMA from a BEFSR41 that has had or develops problems with this firmware release if the user is not able the reflash the firmware. It will accept Version 1 and Version 2 BEFSR41 models that are out of warranty.

2. Anyone with a BEFSR41 purchased in the last 10 months should, I think, replace the power adapter. At the moment the power adapter replacement is open to all B* series router models, even those out of warranty. No proof of purchase required, nor credit card. Use this link, it is the third option:

3. I have been using 1.45 for nearly a month without problems on a BEFSR41 Version2. If your email seems slow, you might want to add a trigger to port 113, as this is no longer open as a default.

So, I updated my befsr41 (version 1, really old bought it in 2000) with the 1.45 firmware. It is now a doorstop! Turn it on and the diag light remains lit. Tried all the tricks to send it new firmware, (hard resets, 10hx static ip connections etc.)

Saw this old post which said that they will rma version 1 and 2 models out of warranty if they have problems with this firmware version.

I talked to a person at linksys and they said there was nothing they could do, after walking me through the reset, ping, flash steps again (failing at ping). Does anyone know the way to get them to replace my unit or am I just plain hosed?

Two thoughts (ignoring how old this thread is):

1. The DSLR FAQ Loooooong reset has always worked for me.

2. I have never called Linksys Tech Support about an RMA issue. I just do it: Discussion and web link for RMA:

Just to note that the current official firmware release is now:

Firmware Date : 8/30/2004
Firmware File Size : Varies
Firmware Version : 1.46.2

I tried all the various levels of reset including the 30+ seconds across a power cycle one. Dead as a doornail! Nothing but solid diag light. I guess I will fill out their rma and see what happens. This unit is long out of warranty, so who knows what will happen. The reason I talked to tech support first is that the rma page needs an "incident number"

When I did this, the current version was 1.45.6, (july 2004) but I sat on the problem since I didn't need the router again until just now! I guess I should have acted then. I just figured, oh well a 4 year old router bites the dust. It wasn't until I was trying to last ditch effort recover the unit when I blew the dust off your old post, and got the bright idea of trying to get it replaced.

I guess I'll just try to send it in, the worst they can do is nothing!

Thanks for your help

I replaced one (quite a while ago, now) just as bcastner described - just get an RMA off the web site & send it. It was replaced with a refurbished one with no questions asked. You've got nothing to lose at this point.

Go for it.
Please let us know what happens.

You should know that Linksys has several paid techs to monitor the DSLR (Broadband Reports) site. Print out the FAQ I linked above, tell them what you did, and what you tried.

It can't hurt. Linksys in my experience is quite quick about the return if you choose the "in-place" upgrade option. (You give a credit card, they send you a replacement, you use the packaging to return the defective unit. They do not charge your credit card.)

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

I too can also echo that in all the years in dealing with linksys i have always had swift RMA service, and have never needed a credit card.. i wouldnt feel nervoise at all though if they did ask for one. the website rma service is outstanding

::.I may not know it all, but I still approach it with confidence to figure it out::.
