GB
Veritas BE v9 build 4175 on NetWare 4.11 & 6

On 2 sites I have have same problem. 20-40gb DDS3 HP Drives
Using DDS3 Tapes - Only get approx 18-20gb on each tape.
I have tried software compression on/off in BE, Switches on drive itself, disbaling AV Software during backup (symantec). No soft-write errors. The data is standard word/excel files & a groupwise system. Compression doesnt seem to happen with either setting in BE?? Puzzled.

Here is a log file for info??

You are getting compression on those DDS3 tapes. DDS3 tapes hold 12Gb uncompressed, and 'up to' 24Gb compressed. I get around 18 Gb on mine, like you do.

If your tape drive is really 20 - 40Gb, then it is a DDS4 deck. DDS4 tapes hold 20Gb uncompressed, and 'up to' 40Gb compressed.

Have you tried the HARDWARE compression option instead of SOFTWARE compression?

I find the rule is based on the drivers you are using. If you opted to use the Veritas drivers, you use SOFTWARE compression. If you opted to keep the tape device manufacturer's drivers, then you use HARDWARE compression.

Hi Bill - yep I have tried this one already as well. This has got me puzzled - why the need for a 2nd tape and why am i only getting 18g on a DDS4 tape???? mmm its a strange one
