I get the following message during 9.1 backup.

OFO: Initialization failure on: "\\MUSTANG\Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
OFO: Snapshot error (0xfffffed1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

When I run VSSAdmin List Writers, all writers come back as Stable and No Errors as Last Error.

I've isolated the problem to files in the dllcache folder. I've uncompressed this folder, copied specific files from \system32 back to dllcache folder and recompressed. The job then completes without failure. After I reboot the server, the problem returns. Any ideas? This problem also occured under BE 9.0. This server is the BE media server.

I'm having a similar issue with the BE 9.0 and Server 2003 in two of my remote offices. In addition, I do show errors when I run VSSAdmin. Several writers are "Waiting for Completion" or "Failed". Veritas posted a TechNote regarding this issue but I don't see how it resolves this problem. See

What happens when you try and do the Shadow copy components backup during the day, does the same error exist?

vssadmin list writers should be run straight after a failure of VSS - as the can reset themselves after a while if it thinks everything is OK.

Also try using NTbackup, see if the error happens again.

There is a patch from MS regarding timeout issues with VSS - it can be found here -
Also how did you pinpoint it to the dllcache folder - interested to know.

Has anyone managed to resolve this problem.
I have not applied any patches and the jobs keep failing
thanks
