On our backup server, we have install the exchange agent. When you browse to the exchange server, you get the choices to back up the mailboxes, and when you expand the list, it enumerates all of the mailboxes. There is also a choice to back up the information store. Now which one do you check? If you back up the information store, doesnt it back up all the mailboxes? Which should you check in order to back up all the mailboxes? Very confusing.

thanks in advance!

If you back up the information store, you are backing up the entire exchange databases. So, this is not only the mailboxes, but virtually everything associated with the exchange server (logs, etc.). Now if you ever had to restore a mailbox and you only had backed up the information store, it would be a royal pain in the neck to restore everthing just to get at one mailbox. So with the Exchange Server agent you can select individual mailboxes to back up. You should select the individual mailboxes *in addition to* the information store. However, don't select the system mailboxes or mailboxes you don't need.

All this is found in the Veritas manuals (in the second volume, around page 1060 I think), but I bought the retail version, so I got the manuals. Many folks didn't get the manuals if they did the download. Hope that helps.
