What am I missing and what caused this to suddenly start failing?

It is not recommended to actually backup the M: drive. The absolute best advice is to remember this is a virtual drive and leave it alone. If you are doing an exchange aware backup, you do not need to back up your exchange folders or M: drive (not recommended). I also do a brick level backup so I can restore individual emails and boxes after my 30 retention is over.
