i am running BE 7.3 multi server ed. on an NT4 machine, i want to backup a windows 2000 server on a different (trusted) domain. Everything works except the System?State backup. (unable to attach to \\SRVName\System?State) Why is this, and what do i need to do to back this up? Could this be a permissions prob?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say its b/c 7.3 was released well before Windows 2000 was released and doesn't support Windows 2000 (thus System State). Sorry for the sass... couldn't resist. It may also be worth noting that 7.3 is no longer supported. So that, in combination with the System State issue, may mean its time for an upgrade.

i deserved that one. Actually what i am looking for is a temporary solution. the 2000 server that i want to backup will, in time, replace the NT server. we are basically near the end of a full migration to 2000, this NT machine is the last to go. However my other backup, A, is already taking to long, and B, the tape is near full. So i cant add this Server to that backup. what i am thinking about is moving the tape drive from the NT machine to the 2000 machine and then backing up the NT off of that? i believe we do have a spare license for BE 8.6, which is what our other 2000 server's are running.

Since you do have a BENT install already on win2k ready to do a restore if necessary, here's a temp solution... Setup NTBackup on the remote Win2k server in question (the backup applet in Win2k, unders Start > Accessories, System Tools, Backup) to backup the local system state to a local file nightly. Then when BENT 7.3 comes along to backup the file system it will also be getting that backup-to-disk file that has the System State in it. This is really a good backup to your backups anyways, as the System State backups only take up about 250MB.
