I've heard that the BDE is going to be frozen with no other development being done on it. DB Express will take it's place apparently.

Does this mean we will have to rewrite db apps which use the BDE?

Anyone heard any other news about this? I couldn't find the article in question (in July's Delphi Magazine).

weez,

Not according to the announcement Borland posted on this very subject. (See for details.)

In particular, note the first image in the article. It shows a loose VCL diagram that suggests that TBDEDataset will continue to be available for a little while, at least. Thus you should still be able to compile your project when the new version(s) ship.

Eventually, you probably will have to transition to a different database engine. However, you won't have to do it immediately.

After all, Delphi still ships with the old Windows 3.x VCL controls and samples.

(One wonders, though, what Corel is going to do with Paradox for Windows. There were rumors a few years ago about them considering different formats, but I've not heard anything recently. Funny thing to think about though, PdoxWin not using the Paradox table format. Of course, I'm easily amused by irony.)

Hope this helps...

It was actually announced in July last year that borland were doing away with the BDE but would continue to support it for the short term future whilst not actively developing it any further. There are a lot of ifs buts and maybes circulating on various different newsgroups at the moment but the main concern seems to be that Borland recently announced the BDE will never be opensourced meaning third party programmers who could write software to allow us to keep using the BDE will not be able to do so.
