Is this a common problem with the BCM50? I have a noisy expansion module. last one I changed the 4x16 insert but at $600 that's going to get pricy for customers. Now I hear it could be the module or the cabinet?

check the fan, they can get loud with age

I don't believe it really matters whether you are talking about the BCM50 itself or the Expansion unit.
It's likely a matter of WHEN the unit was manufactured.

Nortel likely used several different Asian vendors to provide those tiny fans over the years.
I am, unfortunately, a recipient of one of those noisy fan Expansion units. Mine was manufactured in late 2009.
So, of course, I made it my mission to investigate the replacement of those pesky fans.

I have found that "Nortel Authorized" dealers tend to sell them for a rather outrageous
$40+ a pop. $80 to replace both fans? Come on!!
At that price, it would be more sensible to replace the entire Expansion unit
(not the Media Bay Module, however).
I have found the fan for close to $20 at one supplier,
but that still seems a lot to pay for a $2 to $3 fan unit.

It would take some time, and an understanding of what all three wires coming from the
fan do (I am assuming ground, power and speed sensor).
The connector seems like a common type.

So that is the extent of my experience on the matter.
Anyone else have some further data?

I agree but find the connector on my 3rd party fans were 4 wire and had a different type connector so I just properly spliced it.

I have dissected two BCM50 Expansion Modules.

The NOISY Fans are marked like this:
JMC (Large Letters)
8920 (Stamped in middle)
4010-12 HBHA DC12V~0.15A
P/N:402711-4
800-580-6688 (Vendor's Phone)
Made in China
Now we know who manufactured these nasty little Devils.

And now for the QUIETER fan:
G8118R
DC BRUSHLESS
Model EFB0412VHA
DC12V~0.23A -P57J
DELTA ELECTRONICS INC.
MADE IN THAILAND

Perhaps searching for these part numbers will get us a reasonable alternative to the Nortel Distributors' high price.

Happy Hunting!

P.S. When installing your new fans, pay attention to the label side of the fan. It should face toward the outside of the cabinet. Pat attention to where the wires exit the fans as placed in the cabinet fan holders. Take care to dress the wires thru the notch in the metal shield, and to place the wires into the retaining clips on the shield, same as the old fan wires were.
