A colleague has a BCM50 with trunk port trouble, and he is going to pull it for repair, replacing it with his test system (same complement of keycode features). The in-service system is Release 1, and his test system is Release 2, and the question is - can the database backup from the Rel. 1 system be restored to the Rel. 2 system. Or will he have to re-enter all of the programming?

Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA

You cannot restore a backup taken at one release onto another.

You might be able to restore just Telephoney and Voice services(Vmail), but don't try anything else or you will hose it up.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Trunk port trouble is common to old release of BCM 50. Did you try loading some patches first?

As far as I know, all of the patches and updates for R1 have been applied to this machine. I believe that the problems are hardware related, based on the symptoms and the fact that these are just CO POTS lines.

After MagnaRGP's post, I wondered about OS upgrades, and I was able to find the following statement in the Release 3.0 upgrade NTP:
A backup can only be restored to a system running the same software version from which the backup was created.

That appears to be solid since my friend decided to try to start a restore, and he couldn't even see the R1 backup files from the R2 system.

Apparently, the upgrade keycode includes a database migration utility that transfers the customer data to the new release.

Thanks for the replys.
