Hello0 I am new to this technology and have an IP phone system with Nortel 1120E units and a NORTEL BCM50, 3.0 unit. I have an IP phone system with the above NORTEL unit. I downloaded the Network Element Manager Version 60 3.0 to try to communicate with the unit
I am able to connect but not verify the device?
Is there a way I can get the correct software to be able to connect to my system? I have no problems with the system, just wanting to update phone ID’s and messages. Keep getting error message Detector 'BCMDetector' cannot determine the divice type for 10.10.11.1. I tried a CAT5 cable and a Null cable? Used the Verify button and this was OK, just can not connect?

Cat 5 cable is good, connect to OAM port, set your Laptop ip address to 10.10.11.2, sub 255.255.255.0

try that

Hello Gibblett, I changed my laptop IP address to 10.10.11.1 and connected to the BCM50 direct thru the OAM port. Trying to access the unit via Element Manager or a web browser I have no luck. I then changed to 10.10.11.2 and connected via the network and still cannot connect or see the web page. Went into Element Manager and created a new connection for 10.10.11.2 and rebooted computer. Validating Device = Device type unknow. Still getting same error message?

You said connect via the network. The 10.10.10.1 is if you connect your PC directly to the far left rj45 port on the front of the BCM. If connecting thru the network you need to know what the IP address of the BCM is and make a new network IP to connect to in the EM.

I am attaching a page from the Installation Checklist and Quick Start (NORTEL) BCM%) 3.0, page 37 Chapter 4. THis document states that connection to the OAM you are to use 10.10.11.2 and 255.255.255.252. I tried this and still get the same error stating thta the BCMDetector can not determine the device type 10.10.11.2?

did u setup EM correctly to allow a connection ???

What version of Java do you have, try downloading the latest version.

Sorry, I am new to posting and actually could not just attach the scanned page? Bottom line is I still am getting the same error message if I use 10.10.11.2 or 1 or change the subnet ID? Is it possible that the BCM50 password was changed, or would that create another error message?

How can I confirm the IP address of the BCM50? If the password was changed can I reset it without effecting the phone system?
One other thing, I am showing that I am connected to the NETWORK but am not getting the usual green led's indicating the connection is working?
Was running Java 6.0, updated to 7.0 with same results?

Hello Gibblett, I changed my laptop IP address to 10.10.11.1"

Wrong!

Change your laptop to something else other than what is reserved on the BCM.

.1 is reserved

try using .10 and rebooting laptop can help sometimes depending on factors when changing IP.

Make sure its a good patch cable you are using, try a cross over too.

F9*8 will show IP address, of both ports I hope.

OK I now have the login screen and tried to use the default user and password but it is not working?

The OA&M port on the BCM50 is the far left jack as previously stated. It is set to be 10.10.11.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.252. This is set this way so that there are only 2 assignable addresses on it. DHCP is turned on for that network and you cannot change the address or turn off DHCP. This is so that no matter what gets set for the customer, you as a service provider, will always have access when you're standing in front of it.

Just plug your RJ45 cable into that port, set your PC to acquire an ip address automatically and wait for the BCM to assign you 10.10.11.2. In your EM, set up a connection for the 10.10.11.1 address. Click on it, enter your username and password where indicated and then click on the Connect button on the upper task bar.

If you still can't connect, make sure your PC has 10.10.11.2 assigned to it. If it does, ping 10.10.11.1. You should get a response. If not, reboot the BCM and try again. If that fails, you might be looking at a failed unit.

You might want to consider calling in a certified tech to look at it as well.
