Hello All,

I'm looking to replace a BFT in a BCM450 R5. Does anyone have any experience with this?

From what I can gather, I'll have to regenerate the keycodes to the new System ID and I should be able to restore the config from a backup.

Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes correct on all

to see how to physically remove the base Function Tray

Why are you planning on removing the Base Function Tray?. I've never known one go faulty.
The tray is easy to remove on the 450 as it incorporates the Hard disk area.

Thanks CurlyCord. I appreciate the info.

Firebird, Thanks for your inquiry.

My customer's BCM is having IP connectivity problems on the two LAN ports. The system is networked with two other systems. Site to site calling doesn't work and the BCM can't be pinged. Can't connect to the BCM with a laptop connected to either of the LAN ports. The OAM port is fine and the system is not throwing out any alarms. A reboot temporarily fixes the problem, but it re-emerges after a couple of hours. So, I know the config is good and the network is good. Has to be a hardware failure.

The last system patch update for the 450 at V5.0 was System 021 and the desktop was 005.

Make sure that you have the latest updates installed. Also during the power up process, have a serial port with a Null Modem adapter at 115200 baud connected to look for any errors.

There is an option to do a disk check within 5 seconds during the boot up sequence via this port.

I do know that LAN ports on BCM's can fail, but never yet on a 450 system.
I do know that the power units are a major problem with causing odd faults to happen and my advice to be to change this first, if only to rule it out.

A BCM 400 power unit will work on a 450 system. Personally, I've had mainly PSU's go and I sometimes wonder if the older BCM 400 ones were a better quality, although they also fail but considering the numbers of years they have been around I think they haven't been that bad.

If you need any more help, then let us know.

Have you checked the Alarms to see if anything generated that is related or does not look good?

Also try to resit the BFT, Power off the system remove the screws pull it out and then push it back and fasten it.
Sometimes the backplane connect gets partially connected and this may cause such symptoms.

Firebird,

Incidentally, this system is a BCM400 upgraded to a 450. Would the PS cause such an odd and isolated problem?

CurlyCord,

No Alarms at all. Green LEDs.

Yes it can with the Power Supply. I would also take the time to check out the condition of the Motherboard in case you have by any chance a build up of dust as this recently caused me grief on a BCM 400 that had blown the PS and took out a Cisco Switch at the same time as they were on the same UPS feed.

It would also be a good thing to re seat any connections on the board. The BCM 200/400 and 450 systems have a very efficient fan. The problem there is that it blows in cool air and brings along anything else floating in the air, but doesn't clear it away.

For those of us who have worked on these systems in dirty areas, we don't joke when we say that the system needed a hoover and air blower to clean them.

I know exactly what your talking about regarding the dust. I've seen dust accumulate over LEDs so thick that you can't see the LED lit.

One more question, it's been a very long time since I've had to regenerate a keycode. I don't need a migration auth code to regenerate a keycode as long as I return the faulty equipment to Avaya, correct?

What you need is an unused BCM 450 system and someone who has Avaya KRS access so that the systems licenses can be migrated onto the new BFT Motherboard. Both sites MAC addresses will be needed and this can be found on the front of the BCM 450 on a white sticker which tends to be near the bottom module and USB ports.

There are also other dark art ways from the days of Harry Potter and a number of us who use this forum can help you out if you encounter any difficulty.
