BCM CPU Load overload

Customer has a remote site, the logged in and told me they see:
CPU Load Above tolerance at 98% for over a minute

Not sure of BCM version.
They have few phones (no ip) and no ACD.

Any thoughts as to what would cause this load?

Is a backup scheduled for the same time the error is reported? I have a few systems that report the same error.


 
I have seen it once. I had a cable that got cut and the tip and ring where touching and freaking out the system.

 
Make sure that the bcm is patched with the latest service update.
 
I have seen this alarm MANY times on countless systems , all of which are fully patched. Doesn't seem to affect service though.
 
I agree with RP, I've only seen during B/Us.

BCM Chassis type? Could be the first signs of a BFT on it's way out....
 
I've seen it on over 30 BCM's 1000, 200 and 400 with good BFT's and MB, usually when it's rebooting is when I saw it, but I have seen it during Backup's..

I have experienced that problem and it turned up to be a Power connector issue in the backplane. Solution is to get a Y-cable adapter and swapping the existing power cable connector inside and splitting the unused one. Background:
Nortel has been regularly reporting an issue on the BCM / SRG / BCM50 TOP ISSUES bulletin since early 2006
regarding Intermittent Media Bay Module failures.
Analysis of several returned BCM systems has revealed a problem with the female MBM power connector that originates
from the BCM power supply. The connector problem is a design marginality with the female barrel connector pin used in
some of the female power connectors originating from the BCM power supply. On those systems analyzed, the power
connector pins on the connectors that power the MBM backplane have fatigued to the point where a robust power
connection is not maintained, ultimately causing the MBM in question to reset. The connector pin that is subject to fatigue
is used on only two connectors that power the BCM backplane. In the case of Digital Station Modules this is typically
characterized by "247" errors, which can be found in the BCM archlog. Other alarms which may be generated if this issue
is present include: Event 250 / Alarm:50, Event 251 / Alarm:51, and Event 252 / Alarm:52. Note there is no correlation
between the errors generated by software and the type of Media Bay Module installed; any of the errors/alarms may be
generated with any Media Bay Module installed.
If a BCM system has this issue, system users can experience issues such as sporadic call drops, intermittent system
reboots, and frequent alarms being logged (like those mentioned above.) Resetting the BCM may clear the problem
temporarily. Symptoms would likely occur intermittently depending on vibration or system usage.
Analysis:
Nortel has learned that this issue impacts a very small percentage of installed BCM400 and BCM200 base systems and
BCM Expansion Units. As a result of analyzing data from recent case reports, Nortel has identified that the majority of the
affected systems were manufactured in the second half of 2005, with the bulk of them being in the fourth quarter of 2005.
As it is typical that this issue manifests itself within the first few months of installation, it is unlikely that systems installed
and in use for more than 6 months will experience symptoms due to this issue. Though Nortel believes the remaining
exposure is very limited, and only a small number of units affected by this issue remain in the field, we are putting this
solution in place to allow Partners to quickly respond to issues related to the connector pin marginality, if required.
As of May 6, 2006 the manufacturing process for all BCM200 and BCM400 systems, and BCM Expansion Units, has an
additional inspection step in place to ensure this issue does not reoccur. Additionally, the vendor responsible for
providing the part with the design marginality has been removed from the BCM supply chain.

That PWR connector didn't cause the CPU over 98%, that was a reboot or MBM resetting. This is a different problem.
