We have a Nortel BCM50 phone system in the small company that I work for and I've been asked to look at the possibility of using VOIP for cheaper calls. I'm very new to this, so please bear with me !

For a while now we have been using a couple of Skype lines for outgoing calls as they are very cheap and of good quality, I have created a Skype to Sip server which allows sip connections to use the Skype network. This can be set to operate as a Sip trunk or Sip extension
From what I have read so far the BCM50 does allow connection to sip.
What would be the best way to link these two together ?
Do I need to purchase the Voip trunk keycode or is there any demo keycode that I can use to try this feature first ?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Simon

Why not just bring it analog into the system? It is going to require SIP trunking.

If I was to bring it in analog I can see that I can use a TDM800 card in the server.
But the phones (NT8B26AABQ BT T7208) look like they are digital as the phone cable connects into a network style socket and in the server room the other end of the cable in punched into the back of a network style socket and then a network plug is plugged into the front of this which of which the other end is punched into a BT punch down panel(only 2 cables though) which then leads into the BCM50.
If the above is analog then I should just be able to connect to this to the TDM800 ?

Thanks again

Anyone help with regards to the above and analogue lines ?

Thanks
Simon

How do you connect to the Skype lines now? what kind of phone?

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

It's difficult to follow your post. So, I'll just state what I think you want. I'm guessing this TDM800 will supply analog dial tone from Skype to the BCM50. If so, just connect your 2 lines from the TDM800 to the first 2 pairs on the BCM50. (W/Bl-Bl/W and W/Or/Or/W) Make sure you have keycodes to turn on the Analog Trunks. The rest is programming.

At the moment we are just using a usb headset with a softfone on the PC using sip to access the server with skype to sip gateway.

I've found out that I we only have version 1.0 software on the bcm50 which would require a upgrade to 3.0 anyway. Would the anologue option as mentioned above work okay on 1.0 once I've got keycodes ?
Also would a need a ATA on the analogue line to plug the cables in from the TDM800 or just direct cable from TDM800 to pairs on BCM50 ?

Sorry for all the questions, what originaly seemd like such a simple little project isn't turning out to be quite so simple !

Thanks again
Simon

Once converted from SKYPE to an analog circuit you go directly into an analog trunk port. This would work just like a POTS / 1fb line from telco

Correct, SIP not possible until 3.0. If you have Analog Trunk keycodes, your golden. No ATA required.

If I get the keycodes to unlock the Analog Trunk Ports and connect these to the TDM800 am I correct in thinking that I would need FXS modules on the TDM400/800 card and not FXO ?

Really appreciate all your help

Once you are upgraded to Relese 3, you can use the try n Buy VoIP Trunk keycodes.

Once the VoIP trunks are activated on your BCM50 R3 system, they will be automatically assigned to line pool BlocA. To access thes trunk to your Skype server, all you need to do is
1> Define the remote gateway (under Resources- IP Trunk and select SIP and fill in the required details)
2> Define your Route and Destination Code to access the Sip Trunks
3> Assign this line pool (blocA) to the DNs which you allow them to use the trunk
