Just wondering, when Nortel was still Nortel they used to charge for upgrades on the BCM where Avaya used to allow free downloads and upgrades on the IP Office. Is there still a charge to upgrade a BCM50 or can anyone download the software and performe the upgrade.

You have to have a service contract in place with Avaya. It's called the PASS program. Check with your vendor to see if they bought one on your behalf.

You have to have Pass Plus to get the free upgrades and I'm not sure it's even available with the BCM.

Is Avaya doing the same thing for the IP Office?

Just did an up grade on a BCM50 R1 to R6 today. Patchs you can get free if registered, however upgrades EG R1 to R6 required upgrade kits and key code at a cost which additionally will required the factory image file as well to make it work as and R6.
Hope this helps

An upgraded system doesn't require the factory image to function correctly at the new release; however if you do a cold reset for whatever reason, it will revert back to the old release unless you do install the factory image.

Also, if you're downloading patches you will see the warning that if the target system isn't covered by an Avaya service contract you're committing theft of intellectual material and so forth.
