I now have tried 2 hard drives and both have failed. I have a corrupted hard drive in a BCM and replaced the hard drive with one that is imaged to a 4.0. Power down the BCM and installed the new hard drive. System comes back up and works and the Nortel services are up and functioning. All solid green lights. Go into programming and change the IP address through Feature 9*8. System reboots and wont come back up.
What did I do wrong?

or what did you do right?
Did you prove it was a corrupted drive to begin with? and not an MSC card, BFT or Power Supply issue?
Did you initialize the hard drive through the serial port?

How do you initialize the hard drive thru the serial port on a 4.0?

I researched this and think I found the answer.
Once the new hard drive is installed, need to wait 20 min
After 20 min, log in with Element Manager directly thru the laptop on default IP 10.10.10.1 on LAN 1
username nnadmin password PlsChgMe!
Change the time, date, and time zone
Change the IP address and reboot.
Should come back up.
I think the time zone issue is what was locking up the system.

Hello Thomas

I've attached a guide on how to install the hard disk. As you have mentioned, you do need to wait a whilw as it will do various reboots. This is because the 4.0 linux software needs to map itself with the BCM hardware such as a BCM 200, 1000 or 400 etc. This is why you can't swap over a hard disk from e.g. a BCM 200 straight onto a BCM 400 as I found out some time ago.

The serial port method is very useful to use as you can watch the boot up sequence and in some cases, repair any bad sectors.

hello Firebird

i have the same problem of hard disk, does the replacement disk have a blank disk?

Its hard to say. I order the hard drive from a 3rd party. The description says its a 4.0 BCM hard drive so I can presume they load a image on it before it leaves. I never see the drive, it goes straight to the site. My guess is that after its installed and if the services come up with steady green LEDs on the front, its a good drive.

No it cannot be blank, it needs software.
You need to install a hard drive that has the correct software version that matches your system.

Those with a 50/450 can also purchase the BCM Multi Image Drive (NT9T4242E6) which has all images on it, you serial in and choose the correct one, it will load and also erase all the other images on it to make room.
