I have a new BCM 400 with 5 MBMs that I need installed. I'm a little confused as to which bus or dip switches need to be set for each one and I'm looking for a little help. I've read through the documentation and it's still a little fuzzy.

I have:
3-DSM32s
1-DTM
1-GATM8
1-Expansion module

TIA
Mike

I suggest

Bus 7 = DTM
Bus 6 = GATM
Bus 2,3,4 = DSM32

sorry don't have the dipswitch chart in front of me.

What about Bus 5?

Can you also give me an explanation as to why you think this is the correct setup? I'm new to this and I'm looking for a bettter understanding of how the Bus works on the BCM.

Thanks!

First, Dasheen is correct. If you migrated from Norstars you'd get it. Stations at the bottom, Trunks on the top. This allows your stations to be numbered consecutively, from your starting DN.

To split hairs, if your going to have allot of IP telephones, move the GATM to 5 and the DTM to 6. Most likely though is to leave bus 5 available for future.

Thanks for the explanation as to why.

If you don't mind me picking your brain I have a couple more issues that I guess I'm not to clear on.

In the manual it says that the DSM 32 is a double density module and should take two channels. How is it possible to use one bus for each of these modules?

With this setup does this mean I'd only be able to add 32 more lines to my system?

I'm not planning on adding any IP phones right now but I don't know down the road.

Our rep said that the system will support up to 192 phones do you think that includes IP phones or was he incorrect in his statment?

Thanks again!

I copied this from the Nortel manual:
Note that you assign trunk MBMs starting from the bottom
DS30, and you assign station MBMs starting from the top DS30.

Not that I'm going against what you're saying but they say the exact opposite when it comes to positining the modules. So it's even more confusing now.

W/ the above setup u have one available bus left to use. If ur using a DSM 32+ it uses 1 bus. Start your trunks from bus 7 and your stations from bus 2. 192 would depends on your configuration and what apps u use.

Ok from what you're saying this is how I should set my dip switches:

Channel 7 DTM
on on on off on off

Cannel 6 GATM8
on on on off on on

Channel 2 DSM 32+ Set as double density?
off on on on on on

Channel 3 DSM 32+ Set as double density?
off on on on on off

Channel 4 DSM 32+ Set as double density?
off on on on off on

I'm working on getting a scan of the dip switch settings.

Thanks once again,
Mike

Being this confused with the initial setup, imagine where you'll be when you get to the telephony configuration.
Sometimes it really is worth the money to pay a professional for a little help and training.

Thanks for the input support dude. The way I see the best way to learn is to do. I do have a professional on stand by but I wanted to see what I'm up against here. If you have nothing useful to give to the thread please move on.

Easy now ... just my two cents as a professional trying to make a buck in this industry.

You should be extremely grateful that the fine professionals on this forum are willing to freely give you the knowledge they've worked diligently to attain and are well paid to provide. I was merely stating a fact based upon the content of your posts. Would you attempt brain surgery just because somebody could talk you through it on an internet forum?

I happen to agree with you ... doing is learning. Reading is learning as well. Every BCM has a complete set of documentation on the HDD. The Installation Guide will provide the DIP switch settings you seek. Actually, every question you've asked is answered in the documentatiion. So, if you really want to learn, read the documentation. I suggest beginning with the "Overview" document, then moving on to the "Installation & Maintenance Guide". Then when you have questions about what you've read ... come back and post and you'll get some very insightful answers.

I'm not trying to be snotty and I mean no offense.

Thanks for the clearification. I do appreciate the replies and I spend a lot of time in forums helping others out with things I have experience in.

One of the main purposes of this forum or any forum is to help and meet others who share something in common. Once I learn this stuff I'll be more than happy to share my experience with others who are starting out and need some advice.

In my first post I mentioned I read through the manual and support docs but some of the info wasn't too clear.

I get the fact that you're trying to make a buck but why are you on a free forum (that allows you to have a link to your business) complaining that I'm asking questions?

I'm not trying to be snotty either but the canned response to read the manual isn't any help.

Moving on..

I have set all of my DSMs dip switches to Single density and I believe I have it right.

I currently don't have my PRI in yet but I do have some POTs lines that I can test with. I plan to get about 4 lines connected and a few phones and run a test.

Anyone care to comment?

Thanks,
Mike

Ok, great! I'm happy we are able to see eye to eye.

I will change the dip switches back to double density. (This 5 minute shut down is killing me. lol)

I just finished punching the 66 block to connect to my DSM32 and the other one for my GATM8.

Tomorrow I plan to get the POTs lines on and a few extensions.

Thanks again for the advice!
