I have a customer with a BCM 200 3.7 and wants to upgrade to a BCM400 4.0. What's the reccommended upgrade path so that we can save all his user data?

Order the 3.7 to 4.0 upgrade kit. It will include everything you need to get up to date and preserve the customer's data.

You will have to reprogram. I have done this a couple of times and it is not as bad as you might think. Make sure that you document the programming very well. You cannot restore a 200 to a 400. There is no other path than this.

Your question doesn't make any sence. You can't upgrade the BCM 3.7 to 4.0 and keep it at 3.7, think about it.

Acer
fist of all it's "SENSE" and second I'm talking about upgrading a 200 3.7 to a 400 4.0 and wanting to keep the 200 at 3.7 and still be able to tranfer the user config from one to the other.
What I'm going end up doing is buying a 400 3.7 and then restore the user data to the 400 and then upgrade the new 400 to 4.0
Thanks for the replies.

Philbert221, I think he missed that you were going to a 400. Again, you cannot restore a 200 to a 400.

not even if they're at the same rev level? That's going to be a pain.

Now I'm confused....

Why can't you restore telephony and voice apps from a 200 to a 400? As long as those are the ONLY 2 items you restore, there should be no problem. Granted the 400 has to have the same keycodes as the 200, but all else should be ok.

Apparantly there are files that are exclusive to the 400 and exclusive to the 200. Research the docs to verify for yourself.

Voice Apps is the Voicemail software. Nothing exclusive there. Telephony is merely the data within the MSC card. As long as the core loads are the same, there should be no issue restoring from one to the other.

Registry, keycode etc from a FULL backup will cause problems with zero doubt.

I had asked this very question of ITAS some time ago, and we came to the conclusion that as long as you're only restoring those two items mentioned above, you will be fine. The caveats are:

1. Both machines must have identical patch levels
2. Both machines must have identical core loads (including type -- ettiquete vs CT2Plus)
3. ONLY restore telephony and voice apps.

If in doubt about the voice apps, it would only take an hour or so to survey the 200's VM system top to bottom and export all the greetings/ccr prompts. Then rebuild the VM on the 400, import the prompts and the only loss is messages.

MagnaRGP, you may be right and it may work just fine. I have never tried it because Nortel has said it won't work.

Telnet/PuTTy into the units and look at the bottom right where it will tell you the MSC Version.

ex: MSCVersion: 30DcG21

These MUST be identical. the 30 and G21 are relevant to the core revision. The Dc is relevant to the type (ettiquette).

If they match, you should be able to restore from one MSC to another.

Excuse me for trying to help, I'll try to remember not to next time.

Easy ace buddy...you just mis-read the initial question. It took me more than one read to get it. Customer has a 200 V3.7 and wants to upgrade to a 400 V4.0...ergo both a chasis and software upgrade.

Yes I mis-read the question because I scrolled down to far and didn't see the header. I just didn't like him correcting my spelling as I'm not number 3 on the VIP list for my spelling.

Ace, you can help me anytime. You are one of the ones that we can count on for good solid advice.
