I have a BayStack 5510 series switch. The switch appears to function correctly, on a flat private testing network with several hosts. To configure the switch for deployment, I attempted to connect to the console port using Hyperterminal. I am using the following settings:

- straight serial cable
- 9600 bits per second
- no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit
- no flow control
- auto-detect emulation type (have also tried VT100, ANSI)

I then press CTRL-Y, enter repeatedly....and get nothing.
Have also tried CTRL-C, etc.

I am perplexed since it was my understanding all Nortel switches used these settings. Am i doing something stupid wrong? Thanks.

Try Hyperterm private edition or Hyperaccess;much more friendly.
Set emulation for VT100. I do not rember if a null-modem cable is required. Do you have the Nortel console cable?

Rick - thanks for the reply.

Actually, I am using Hyperterm private edition. Forgot about that.

Emulation is set to V100. I've tried both straight serial and null modem cables, with no results.

We bought the switch new, and it did not come with a console cable.

Any other ideas? TIA!

You probably need a null modem adapter in the cable. Every Nortel switch and router I own needs a null modem adapter in the cable - straight-thru cabling doesn't work.

The cable pinouts, are pin for pin, 1 through 8 on both sides.

So if you have db9 to RJ45 female connectors, just pin them the same on both sides, 1 through 8. It does not matter what order the colors are in, just that they match on each side.

Then use a standard ethernet cable, and you are good to go.

And in regards to hyperterminal, just use the defaults. I always just select my COM port, then when it comes up with the settings, just hit "restore defaults" and press OK.

You should be able to get on it with that.

I have been working on the 5510's now for a while. in fact I have 9 in the field.
Try to connect locally via console cable / hyperterminal. com 1, 9600 baud, data, parity and stop bits are default and flowcontrol is xon / Xoff.
Should work.
Ditch the serial cable and make a 9 pin connector for both sides with these pinouts using cat5 cable in between.

Also works with 450, 460, BPS and 380's, 5510's, 470.
blue -pin 6
orange -pin 5
black - pin 7
red- pin 8
green -pin 4
yellow -pin 3
brown -pin 2
grey -pin 9
Cheers!

Big thanks to Dualie and Jynxx. I gave up on serial cables and used Cat5 with DB9 adapters, and it worked on the first try. This is after a lot of pounding my fist on the desk, et cetera, so I really appreciate it.

Fyi- any nortel gear that you purchase new does NOT come with a console cable. Unfortunately, you need to build them.
The pinouts that I gave you work for most pieces of gear excluding the 8600 layer 3 series switches and some of their more expensive routers- BLN, BCN etc.
regards,
dualie
