I just acquired a Nortel 5510 48t on craigslist. Switch works fine but has old software on it believe v4. In reading up on how to update the software, it has to go through every version (5.0 5.1 6.0 etc). I also found out that software is only available through a service contract with Avaya (which i don't have, not for 1 test switch). I'm looking for someone to assist me in updating the switch to the latest software.

Thanks

Guess the lesson to be learned, if your not using Nortel in a business environment (with a support contract) stay away. Mine will be back on craigslist.

Unfortunately you need a support contract to upgrade the software. Are you looking to upgrade for a particular feature? Version 4 was fairly stable release.

Ring your local technical sales team and tell them you're trying to self-train on Nortel and ask if they can help.

I haven't dealt with my local Nortal people for a few years but when i did they were helpful. In fact I remember their sales engineer giving me a disc full of software when I needed some.
On the whole, a sensible vendor should support more people becoming familiar with their product.
