hi guys, i am a novice trying to get ahead here with a 2003 cert. i am following along with the microsoft server 290 cert book and i have a few questions on the terminal server section.

this is what i can do so far. i can log into the domain server via remote and manage it and i can see that in the terminal server manager.

now i have loaded the the termal server software onto my server 2003 computer and i am trying to set up terminal services. since i can remotely admin it, i am wondering what other specific uses is ther for terminal services? for instance it says youcan run programs from a terminal services connection. what programs would you run? are they as simple as word or is for other more complex programs? can someone give me an example or examples.

can an xp client be used to access terminal server via remote access and if so why? what would they do? as admin?

my book has me connecting two 2003 servers via terminl server and not an xp client. but i have an xp client and what i am trying to understand is what exactly is this used for? it seems to me that i am remotely logging into the server.

again what am i trying to achieve with this in my two computer network?

what i am doing is trying to log into server1 from a client computer as a domain user. i set the user up to join the remote access group but i seem to get a message telling me that permisions aren't set correctly. exactly which ones i don't know at this moment because i am not at that computer. i know there are other permissions that can be set.

once iconnct to the server via terminal server what do isee? the desktop of the user i used to log in?

thanks.....

Too many questions in one post.

1. Running MS Office in the TS is good example.
2. Many of my clients need to access their database remotely, for example VPN. Running the TS to process data is more faster than VPN client.
3. Sure, many people use XP to access the TS. We have a software with only 5 licenses, but we have over 20 users need to run this software. You don't need to install 20 copies on all workstations and normally never have more than 5 users run the software at the same time.

Almost any program that can run on XP, and a lot of programs designed for NT and earlier, can run on Terminal Services.

You need to install them while in Install mode and then switch to application mode in order to run it.

Terminal Services also offers the advantage of only having to install the software once. You don't need to roll it out to each XP client.

Cheers.

thanks, here is a follow up. i am logged onto the xp client and i need to use database smasher. so i remotely go to the server1 where database smasher is located using remote access right?

do i log in with my existing userid or do i use another userid?

if 5 workers could be using the same program at the same time then i assume we can't use the same userid because youcan only log on once per userid?

what do i see when i log remotely into the server? if it is my userid then is it my desktop? so i guess i am actually logging on twice. initially onto the network on the client and then onto the server?

so does this person then ned a local account of some sort on the server?

thanks......
