I have an old printer serial port cable with a wide plug one end that I've put into port A, and the narrow plug the other end plugged into my laptop.
I open hyperterminal and open a new connection: COM 1, 9600 baud, and all the standard settings...and....nothing: just a blank screen.

what simple thing am I doing wrong.

I'm new to solaris hardware - I'm a simple architect/programmer, sorry.

Unfortunately with some cables you'll need a null modem adapter. By no means am I an electrical engineer, but having experienced most of what Sun has to offer I can tell you that this is most likely the cause of your lack of signal. Sounds like your hyper term settings are correct though, 9600/8/N/1.

thanks... I'll go find out what one of those is.

Or, can I mod the cable I've got with a soldering iron?

A star for taking the trouble to post back, Jonnyspin!

I want to be good, is that not enough?
