Basic Micros Hardware Questions

Hello! I'm looking to do some restaurant application development for a few of clients who have various Micros systems installed. I'm thinking of running the application on their already existing and installed terminals but need to know more about Micros hardware in general.

Does anyone have general knowledge they could share on the popular restaurant terminals (3700, 9700, e7 I assume?). I'm looking for screen resolution (what does the display handle, what is default?), operating systems (I know the e7 runs Windows CE, and the 3700 runs XP or 2003 -- are these often or ever set up for windows updates? I want to consider .NET as an option), and can I make any assumptions about what version of RES software will be running on different terminals?

Bump, can anyone help me on this? Just a few comments from your experience could go a long way.

3700, 9700, etc. refer to the software version of Micros. The terminals can be either win32 or windows CE based. So, 3700 terminals do not always run on XP or 2003.

The RES software running on the terminals depends on what is installed on the micros server - so if the server is running RES 4.x, then the terminals are running 4.x.

Are you thinking of writing an application that interfaces with Micros or is just launched from Micros?

I actually only want to access data from Micros for a reporting system. I need to access beer (on tap) purchase records at some given time interval (several times a day). From what I've read, I can access Micros' database, but I have struck out getting any details (and don't yet have a terminal/server to play with).

I was asking about the hardware because I'm considering running the app on a PoS so I don't need a second machine in my friend's restaurant.

I would suggest doing a web app. You can create a launch key from the micros software that will launch IE with the site that you create. what version of micros are you writing the app for?

I'm actually looking to handle several different versions of Micros eventually. A test bed will be the 3700 terminals, and I'm not sure which server version (I planned to check this week).

Is it easy to create a launch key? Do you know how accessible the database schema is for beverage transactions? Any place that would be a good place to learn more about it?

the easiest way would be to review the database when you can look at a system.

Sorry for all the dumb questions -- hard to get started in PoS systems it seems... Just login in as "custom" I've read? Does it depend on what version of RES is running?

It is easier to explore the database using SyBase Central

Why don't you just modify a 40 column Time Period Menu Item report? Copy the canned version as a custom report, (mi_tps01 on the 3700), and edit the selection query by Major, Family or Menu Item group to just show your beer sales. Stick it in an autosequence, link the autosequence to a touchscreen button and you're done.
