Is it possible to have Great Plains 8.0 interact with a barcode scanner?

Whe are thinking on implementing barcodes on our finish product serial numbers, so that the quality personel just scan the code and have them added to GP.

If this isn't possible directly on GP, can I create a program that connects to the GP DB and add them that way?

First I will have say that it is a very bad idea to update the tables directly in Great Plains.

We use barcoding here. The product is from Maximum Data.

The product uses a dedicated PC and actually inputs the data that the user scans, not updating the tables directly, which is the way that Great Plains wants users to input data into the sytem.

I don't know if they have an option that would help you, but they are worth a phone call.

Just as an example you will need to buy at least 1 Intermec Barcode Scanner and have 1 pc for the software to access a Great Plains client.

I have also had positive experience using maximum data. Downside is dedicated PC and using a full license (seat).
We purchased hardware from them - a bit priceier but it was plug and play.

We use barcodes on our dist centre items and the user has a sales order open in Great Plains, and just scans in the items into each invoice line. It just saves on lookup and keystrokes for us.

We use Strandware Label Matrix to create the barcodes, and it has an ODBC link that we set up to print labels for open receivings and other specific options that we set up.
