Bar Code text string with spaces

I received an odd request place a bar code of a description field onto a Crystal Report. The field is text and typically could be one, two or three words with a space in between the words. I typically would use a stringtocode39 function, but am having difficuly reading on a scanner the barcodes that are multiple words. I realize it's probably an odd request, but is there a way to read a multiple word barcode? Thanks.
